This hands-on review covers everything you need to know about the Nikon Z MC 50mm f/2.8 Macro, a lightweight macro lens for Nikon's Z System. As a true macro lens, the 50mm MC is capable of reaching 1:1 magnification, albeit with a short working distance. Here's how it measures up! Continue Reading » - Posted on Sunday February 23, 2025
Migrating winter birds have not yet arrived at their breeding grounds, but for some birds, courtship is already in full swing. Many owls, including the Tawny Owl (Strix aluco) in this photo, are at the peak of their mating season. Take a walk in a park or forest after sunset, and you may well hear the sounds of these magnificent nocturnal hunters. Their flight is as silent as ever, but their far-reaching hoots now enliven the darkness of the forest. What else can you hear this week? Perhaps some news from the photography world. Perhaps every nature photographer dreams of capturing some rarity in nature - be it a unique or rare animal or some seldom-seen behavior. Ideally, of course, both at once. I recently published an article that focuses on a rare color variation in birds. Today's short post has something even more unusual. Continue Reading » - Posted on Monday February 17, 2025
In landscape photography, we often look for spectacular and majestic subjects. Imposing mountains, breathtaking waterfalls, or lush forests are powerful and visually appealing. Even more so when shot under dramatic light. However, if you wish to obtain significant images, looking for atmospheres that resonate with our state of mind is often more helpful than focusing on famous, outstanding places. The Gray Wagtail is a charming bird quite commonly found along streams and rivers. Its constant tail wagging has inspired similar names in many languages. This week, the Czech Ornithological Society named it Bird of the Year. They pointed out the bird’s relationship to important natural waterways, many of which have reduced in size dramatically, making it harder for the environment to retain water. In just a month, the wagtails will be returning from their wintering grounds. I can’t wait to wade into the cool waters of the streams again and watch their interesting lives. On February 13, 2025, Nikon announced their newest Z Mount lens: the Nikon Z 28-135mm f/4 PZ. The “PZ” in the name stands for “Power Zoom” – one of many ways in which this lens is meant for videographers or hybrid shooters. At $2600, this is a very specialized lens, but it also represents an exciting new step for Nikon in the realm of videography. Here’s what you need to know. I just returned from one of the longest hikes I’ve ever done, the famous O Circuit in Chile’s Torres del Paine National Park! This eight-day hike goes around the Paine massif itself, circumnavigating these magnificent peaks and showcasing them from every angle. For landscape photography, it’s hard to think of a more exciting hike. Continue Reading » - Posted on Wednesday February 12, 2025
Today’s noise reduction software is capable of incredible results. Images that couldn’t be salvaged in the past can be made quite clean with modern denoise algorithms. But what is the real benefit of these tools compared to capturing more light in the first place? Continue Reading » - Posted on Monday February 10, 2025
It was a freezing morning. The snow in a small clearing in the middle of the forest crunched under my feet. Suddenly, I lifted off the ground and slowly began to gain altitude. The rays of the rising sun, which only a moment before had been shyly making their way through the branches of the dense young spruce trees, suddenly hit me in all their fresh golden glory. I gained altitude, and above the crowns of the towering spruces I made my way over the snow-covered meadow, from which the rising sun was just stripping the shadows of the trees like a sort of frayed blue tablecloth. I was enjoying the unearthly beauty… when the display of my controller announced a low battery. A minute later, I landed my drone back at home, lit the stove, brewed a hot cup of coffee, and wrote this Photography News for you. Continue Reading » |
